Syria has one of the oldest continuous urban civilisations on earth, and its young people grow up among monuments and crafts that most countries can only study from books. Damascus and Aleppo are among the longest-inhabited cities anywhere; the old quarters, covered souqs, caravanserais and citadels of both are the country's defining teaching environment. Alongside them sit the Crusader castle of Krak des Chevaliers, the Roman city of Bosra, the classical ruins of Palmyra, the coastal mountains behind Latakia and Tartus, and the orchards and olive country of the interior. Craft and vocational traditions remain deep: damascene inlay and steelwork, brocade weaving, soap making, carpentry, copperwork, tailoring, masonry and food production. Youth work has long been organised through scouting, student unions, charitable associations and neighbourhood mutual-aid committees, and volunteering — repair of schools and clinics, clean-ups of public squares, tree planting and support for displaced families — is a familiar part of young people's lives. Programmes here are land-based and heritage-centred: old-city conservation and documentation, Arabic language and culture exchange, supervised camping and hiking in the coastal mountains and the Qalamoun and Anti-Lebanon ranges, and youth leadership camps. Activity is planned with local partners and permissions, and areas are chosen so that groups work in stable, supervised conditions.
